Walland was known for its tannery, which was easily placed due to its river and railroad access. Unfortunately, the tannery burned down, but the town was able to save its economy due to the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They began to get tourists traveling through to visit the park.
The Little River Railroad was built between Walland and Townsend in the early 20th century. It was originally a logging railroad, but began taking passengers to Elkmont, which had the Wonderland Hotel.
One of the most iconic features in Walland is the beautiful Little River. On hot summer days you can see families tubing or kayaking down the river enjoying the cool water. If you are in a secluded area you might even get to see a river otter! The river also provides fantastic fishing.
A new section of the Foothills Parkway was built between Wears Valley and Walland in 2018. This drive provides some of the most spectacular views in all of East Tennessee. You don’t even have to get out of your car to be amazed.
One of the best hidden treasures in East Tennessee is a high-end resort called Blackberry Farm. This resort takes up an entire mountain and is closed off to the public.
